The Centrist's Corner

In the Center...There are no Corners

Last night as I lay gently in repose and thought about suggestions, discussions and political woes. I found myself mired in reminiscences of past discussions, of discontent from the left and malcontents from the right, it dawned quite brightly, that now corners come in painters' realms when painters paint themselves into corners. Yet--in the center there are no corners--and so began my plight--for stones can fly from left and right when centrists' trade they begin to ply. Could the center, the core, the bridge between be better right than the right? Or left in between can centrist euphoria be better left to all than leftists left to chaotic rule?

You see we have a need for someones...anyones...all the right and all the left ones... to nose ahead and find themselves sniffing, and thinking, and meeting somewhere in the middle. The bridges are burning and leftians and rightians are turning, into Muppets that are dragged, as puppets, by staffers (or their own delusional leaning to narcissistic self-importance) who have yet to graduate from institutions of lesser learned ones and even lesser learning. So now, my fingers are churning, and there seems to be a yearning--where should we be turning? Does anyone feel the need, the need for new adjourning, learning and blaming fingers pointing to mirrors, not queers, seeing self for what ego has become--empty--rant-icle--tyrannical.

So flee, run to the middle. The coin won't flip, the earth won't tip and those a little more on may become a little less more-onic? The constant banter of public discussion regarding very personal topics like orientation of affection, childbirth, marital union and drug use are not for civil topics--these are private matters for individual citizens that have been brought to society through personal sacrifice by soldiers, warriors, brave souls that believed in freedom--for the progress of humankind--for nobility to finally rest in the breast of the modern human.

We should honor this privilege--and not re-write histories, or past glories or personal stories of a religious ilk.

For many on the far right fringe, "It's Jesus, please, oh God...save us from these godless heathens who don't worship at the altar of nihilism, and others that worship at the deities of spaghetti monsters and Allah and a virginal peanut butter cookie!" When all the while, books are written by celebrities with names like Snookie? And singers sing, like Gaga, though stylishly adorned, born to be this way, the lyrics of tolerance are scorned.

And so it seemed from much experience, deep research and simply a flick of the thumb on the remote control's drum, "A centrist...we need a centrist...like Jesus, not dissimilar, for love may find a way...a man, or woman, or both, or the same, who could tell a tale and not embitter socialists...not enrage the most-cialists...and soothe the savage tone of gun-toters in Tucson, cross hairs on democratic constituencies and weary Obamas who just want you off his 'Barack.'

Anyone say, "Lucy is the sky...with Diamonds?"

Now, can you honestly trust a woman who won't answer a question about anything she's uncomfortable discussing?

Who will build the bridge?

The continued fervor of right wing pundits and politicos to rule nations, peoples and ideals seems a constant theme as we hear banter and blather from names of old like Gingrich or Paul; calls for a return to "old-timey values" from new names like Palin and Bachmann, but the furious accusations thrown at a first-term president from the left trying to support the leader who negotiates by giving "14/15ths" of the demands made by his stuck-in-their-tracks Republican opponents has caused a stagnant session in discussing the financial remains of the day for the world's leading, tho' injured, economic 'beacon on the hill'. At a time, when action against certain repercussions is a must--both parties will be blamed--and once again isn't this an indicator for a middle ground, a centrist island where all can stand with--a will to meet and solve this divided place of light?

Abraham Lincoln once said, "If I was two-faced, (as he was accused by opponents) do you think I would wear this one?"

We all know how hypocritical the life of a politician can be, yet the constant mud-slinging and accusatory dialogue continues even tho' the rare politician seems to make a career without some sort of skeleton jangling out of a closet. There's a hub for ya, "Who was the cleanest politician of all time?"

Honest Abe

Now that's a clean politician! But didn't he have to get his hands dirty--not to mention that whole assassination thing.

Central Air Conditioning

Perhaps the greatest gift that politicians in America could give to the world...let alone their own citizenry...would be a return to some sort of structured game plan...y'know...some goals.

"Let's pay the bills."

"Let's give our soldiers the right to an education after serving more than three years--risking their lives for very little financial benefit."

"Let's stop squawking about church and state separation--and just separate the two--there was a reason for this. Oh yeah, so people could have freedom of religion."

"Let's allow our children to live in a nation that wants success, not yearns for the next game craze."

"Let's become a nation of free-thinking, brave revolutionary individuals."

Teach your children well, so they may tell...is a song lyric...but it's also a prompt to communicate. Unless the nation that has led the world in economic, military, charitable and societal standards for over hundred years gets it's act together the 21st century is going to be a long and arduous trip that drives into one ditch after the other--on the right then on the left--left, right, left, right.

Hmmm, the echoes of a goose step? If we start burning holy books and demanding our opinions and lifestyles on our fellow citizens, what are we? Time for air conditioning...a fresh breeze to blow the partisan pirates out of the water and create a main street that all can build their shops on.

Black Wine and Roses

We'll be sipping black wine and sniffing black roses if we don't learn the old Sesame Street song...remember...cooperation?

Where's the virtue in being a non-committal, centrist, moderate, fence straddler?

In any case, you're far from a moderate. You're far left, even if you don't like to admit it.

Millions of Americans are serving overseas, some in Afghanistan and Iraq. They don't serve for the right or left, they serve for all America and the freedoms we have have. If we were all right or left, we wouldn't be free now, would we?

I know I can't speak for all soldiers but when I served in the 80's, America meant freedom. I served for all Americans regardless of their political party. Can you imagine if we change out our soldiers every time a new party is elected to office?

I'm holding myself back, but I'm really tired of the politics. I'm tired of seeing other polititions say the current President is unAmerican. They should be ashamed of themselves.

I enjoyed reading this a lot. From the contemplation to rhyming sing song of ideas to the central air. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I never knew about that Abe quote...it's marvelous! Great ideas, wonderful writing (as usual) and great job. :)

Between a lie and the truth, how centrist are you willing to be?

But our divide is due to the failure of the republic to do its job: represent the people and act as a clearing house of ideas. It will continue to dwindle in this function, as the it has a built in problem, population growth. Our nation has expanding in population over a 100 times since it was founded. Yet, our "government" - the representing bodies of our nation- has only grown a tiny fraction of that. The best hope for America is what she was founded upon democracy and representation; to get it back the people will have to rise up and demand more representatives; their representatives. Our founding fathers had representatives, but they were appointed by the King, so they rebelled. Now our representatives are appointed by wealth, power, and special interest.

Will, you're a funny man. A one-trick pony that can't be led to water and made to think. I could quote an old movie title, They Shoot Horses, Don't They? Of course, that's not a threat, I just think the right is lame and the left is too soft and isn't promoting real change.

dfager, I feel your frustation--the soldier pawns will always get a raw deal, regardless of their political alignment. "Old soldiers fade away," claimed McArthur, but in reality many are uncared for receive little aid after difficult sacrifices.

One of my greatest disappointments is the lack of respect for President Obama--George W. wasn't a responsible leader and yet the left seemed to show considerable respect for the office unlike the last three years when we look at the mud-slinging from the right.

Pam, thank you for your kind comments. I felt the need for some rhythmic prose...and so here it fell. Lincoln's quote was a recent find and I was compelled to use it.

Voltaire, much of my life was viewed from a staunch, elitist christian right angle, but the last ten years have seen a move toward a central left positioning. I've realized agnostics are better off than anyone--more tolerant and less judgmental--because until a god shows up no one can be sure--it's all theory.

As for the centrist position regarding truth and lies. The truth is the people do need more representation not less, but the fact that people are hungry and unemployed and unsupported by what the right is calling "big gov't" now doesn't make the future look brighter.

There aren't enough voices in the debate, and fewer are being heard through the fifth estate, the media, than ever before. Does the internet make a difference? Are more voices shouting out? Yes, but are they making a difference to return western democracies to safe havens of freedom? We will see.

Thanks, LRC...always a pleasure to put something out there that creates some dialogue.

My father use to tell me, "A man convinced against his will, is of the same opinion still." So much of the political dialogue is being filtered to people who want to hear the message that they are comfortable hearing. Palin does this, Maher does this...but in many ways it is the jesters of the media who are hitting the points of dispute and asking the right questions.

If the people, and corporate magnates, would open their eyes and see the dire straits that the West's ship is sailing perhaps we could right our course. It may take a financial calamity, but for many individuals, myself included, the ship has sunk and a new one has to be built.

The voices in the wilderness need to come together and claim the middle region, make peace and create trade, profit and future hope in a revival of a strong economy. Smoke and mirrors have caused this collapse--time to clear the air and break a few mirrors--or at least look into them and see the real issues.

So who are you impugning here? Two leftist women?

Of course not! You're smearing conservative women only, because you're a leftist and this Hub is anything but centrist.

And why is it that left wing, non-American, pseudo-intellectuals, love to lecture Americans?

randslam,

That picture of Sarah Palin is real cute.

So where did you hang it in your bedroom? Next to your model airplane collection?

And make sure your mom isn't anywhere near your room while you are doing naughty things to yourself while you are gazing at that picture.

Just got back in town... was almost in Canada. Nice job, and being a centrist if much more difficult than being blindly left or right. It's quite the balancing act. For those who are comfortable at the extremes... hey, quit being so lazy and help out with the real thinking.

Will, ask a different question...I've answered these.

If you want to know where you are on the political spectrum and quit lecturing me about my leftist ways try:

Feenix, Sarah is cute, and so is Michelle, but c'mon, these two would be nowhere if they didn't portray those red dresses with such flair.

I'm too old to be doing naughty things to myself, Feenie, I'll leave that up to your imagination. Nice repartee, by the way, attack with bedroom humor and no response. Think, therefore, you are.

Will, I answered that on your hub. Why don't you quit telling me how little opinion I should give? I'm very American having instilled doctrines from a militaristic republic constantly advertising their bombardment of utopia upon me...suck it up...and start behaving responsibly.

Oh, and thanks for the compliment, I like "pseudo-intellectualism." It's a perfect fit for who I am...must be another centrist kinda thing.

" I'm very American having instilled doctrines from a militaristic republic constantly advertising their bombardment of utopia upon me.."

Translation: You're right...American politics is none of my business, but I'm a typical meddling liberal and can't help myself.

I've seen this hundreds of times through the years and it's always a puffed-up, full-of-himself, liberal. Non-American conservatives never stoop to lecturing Americans.

Glad I can stir your ire, sire. As to "conservatives never stoop to lecturing Americans" or being stupid...can't agree with you.

As to me being "puffed-up, full-of-himself liberal," I'll take the name-calling as childish. C'mon, Will, you've got better things to do.

randslam,

If you are too old to be doing "naughty things" to yourself then you are "too old" to be posting that kind of a photo of a woman in a public forum like HubPages.

By posting such a photo, you have shown me and all other men who respect womanhood that you have the mindset of a teenage boy.

That picture is nothing but souped-up grafitti. And grownups don't do grafitti.

randslam profile image

randslam Hub Author 10 months ago

Wow! That photo is a political cartoon...enjoy the joke of it. If you don't understand...have a nice day...there is nothing offensive about that pose, and when one looks at the garbage coming out of Palin's mouth once more about, "lock and reload."

The woman is an embarrassment.

feenix profile image

feenix Level 7 Commenter 10 months ago

randslam,

I have been living a very long time and I have seen thousands-upon-thousands of political cartoons over the years so I know one when I see one. And what you slapped on the top of this page is NOT a political cartoon.

Furthermore, and as I stated before, that picture is adolescent and in very poor taste. Plus, it is not even clever and it is just a few knotches above being pornography.

And no, no, no! Governor Sarah Palin is not an embarassment at all. She is a very competent and proficient executive -- and she is a lady.

I'll tell you who's an embarassment: Bill Clinton.

Any old dude serving as the "Leader of the Free World" who shoots off his DNA on a 22-year-old woman's dress is a depraved pervert and freak who's damned near a pedophile.

It is interesting how easily the mud flinging crosses borders. Certainly many good Canadian Mounties work hard to keep the peace in spite of childish, “Lord of the Fly” like creatures who wreak havoc in downtown business districts, rioting over hockey and soccer games. The masses, no matter how feeble or sheep like, derive their values from trained leaders. If our leaders are lacking in quality, then we have little redress. Why I do agree with some that you poke your finger in your own eye, your creative prose is at least worthy of creative acknowledgement. Cheers.

randslam profile image

randslam Hub Author 10 months ago

Feenix, we don't see things on the same plane--not a problem--just an observation. I don't believe this to be pornographic in the least, as I don't see a portrait of any nude as pornographic, but that is your puritan outlook--I have a different, more liberal, view.

As for Bill Clinton, I believe that should have been between Bill and his wife--I don't have to comment on what was once more--a foolish invasion by the American media. I won't judge that whole scenario, but obviously you will. I would prefer not having an unintelligent person in the Oval Office--and Palin is no lady--that woman is a "Mama Grizzly."

Thanks for your comments, Jason. If I suffer from blindness by my own digits than I am clumsy--blindness--self-inflicted. How droll.

I personally don't see it that way, but the view from the middle is expansive, grand and panoramic. I appreciate your appreciation at an attempt of waxing bold from the middle, the bridge, the point of negotiation and understanding of each extreme.

Oh, and I'm glad you like the way I write good...haha.
